Spring Yoga Week 1: The Foundation of Power

As we open the gates to our 6-week spring yoga journey, we begin at the most vital point: the ground beneath our feet. Before we can harness the high-velocity energy of the Year of the Fire Horse, we must ensure our foundation is built on integrity rather than ego.

In a world that often feels fractured by fear and division, reclaiming your power isn’t about being the loudest voice in the room. It’s about being the most centered.

The Philosophy

This week, we dive into the first two limbs of Yoga: the Yamas (social ethics) and Niyamas (personal disciplines). Specifically, we are looking at:

  • Satya (Truth): The radical realisation that we are fundamentally interconnected. When we see the truth that my well-being is tied to yours, the us vs. them narrative begins to dissolve.
  • Ahimsa (Non-violence/Compassion): In a divided world, refusing to hate is an act of supreme power. We use compassion not as a passive retreat, but as a shield that protects our hearts from hardening.
  • Tapas (Disciplined Heat): The internal fire required to stay kind when things are difficult. It takes “heat” to stay present and upright when the world feels heavy.

On the Mat

We will focus on the posterior chain—the muscles of the back, glutes, and hamstrings. This Strong Back represents our boundaries, our history, and our Satya. It gives us the support we need to maintain a Soft Heart (the front body). If the back is weak, the front collapses into protection. If the back is strong, the heart can stay open and compassionate.

Weekly Reflection / Take-Home Practice

Power isn’t just what happens during a 60 minute class; it’s how you carry yourself through the noise of the world. This week, practice your Satya Check:

  1. When you encounter fear or a divide in your day, notice if your chest collapses or your jaw hardens.
  2. Physically straighten your spine. Feel the strength of your Strong Back supporting you.
  3. Take one breath and affirm: “I am rooted in truth; I choose compassion as my shield.”
